EOS 500D Rebel T1i HD Video

Update: November 21, 2009
A lot of people have been wondering about the song featured in a new Canon TV commercial showing across Canada for the EOS 500D Rebel T1i. It shows a mother and a newborn child and shows off the camera's HD Video and autofocus capabilities. The song is called Surprisingly So by Amy Seeley. On her Twitter page, Amy says the song will be released digitally soon. In the meantime, you can listen to it on her MySpace page.

One of the most interesting EOS 500D Rebel T1i features is the ability to record High Definition (HD) video. This DSLR can record full HD Video at 1920 x 1080 resolution (1080p), 1280 x 720 (720p) or at 640x480. Total recording times for each video mode is shown in the recording time table below. With the included ZoomBrowser EX/ImageBrowser software, you can extract still images from your movie, a handy feature for making small prints or artwork from your video. Or, you can take full resolution still photos during movie shooting. With HDMI output, you can view your video and stills on your HD TV! Imagine seeing your images and videos playing on your large-screen HD TV!

EOS 500D Rebel T1i HD Video Details

The Rebel T1i shoots brilliant video in standard or full high definition. To shoot a video, select Movie mode on the EOS 500D Rebel T1i's mode dial - the camera's 3.0-inch LCD will light up and it's ready to go. Shooting is at a frame rate of 30 fps when shooting SD or HD quality video (640 x 480 and 1280 x 720 pixels, respectively) and at a frame rate of 20 fps in Full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels) recording. Sound is recorded through the camera's built-in microphone. Playback modes are simple to access, and all Live View AF features can be used in shooting video.

The total movie recording time depends on your battery, memory card, and video mode you are shooting in. The table below shows Canon's estimates. Note that an individual movie can be no longer than 4GB. The camera stops the movie when it reaches 4GB. You can resume shooting if memory remains on the card, up to the capacity of the memory card but each video is limited to 4GB

Video Mode Total Recording Time File Size
4GB Card 16GB Card
1920x1080 (1080p) 12 min. 49 min. 330 MB/min.
1280x720 (720p) 18 min. 1 hr. 13 min. 22 MB/min.
640x480 (SD) 24 min. 1 hr. 39 min. 165 MB/min.

As you can see, you'll want more than one large memory card if you plan to shoot long movies.

When the sound recording is turned on, the built-in microphone will record in monaural (unlike the 5D Mark II, an external microphone cannot be used).
